Can You Sleep in Clip-In Hair Extensions?

Can You Sleep in Clip-In Hair Extensions?

You’ve had a long day, your hair looks amazing, and you’re exhausted, but can you sleep in your clip-in hair extensions?

In short: no, you shouldn’t.

Sleeping in clip-ins can cause tangling, breakage, and unnecessary pulling and stress on your natural hair and scalp.

At Maiden Hair Extensions (MHE), we always recommend removing your clip-in extensions before bed. Instead of sleeping in them, we’ll show you the best ways to properly remove, store, and maintain your clip in extensions health overnight so they stay fresh and long-lasting.

Why you shouldn’t sleep in Clip-in extensions

Clip-in extensions are a temporary option to adding volume to your hair and not designed for overnight wear. Leaving them in while you sleep can lead to a variety of issues.

Tangling & matting
Your natural hair moves while you sleep, and so do your clip-ins. The friction between your extensions and the pillow can cause tangling and matting, which makes it much harder to style the next day.

Hair damage & breakage
The clips can pull on your natural hair while you toss and turn in your sleep, which can lead to stress on the roots and even breakage over time. This is especially risky for those with thin or delicate hair.

Weakened clips & shorter extension lifespan
Sleeping in clip-ins puts unnecessary pressure on the clips, causing them to loosen or weaken. Over time, this can reduce their durability and how strong they hold in your hair.

Scalp discomfort & irritation
Sleeping with metal clips pressing against your scalp isn’t the nicest feeling and can cause some discomfort, headaches or even scalp irritation.

MHE Tip: If you accidentally sleep in your clip-ins, detangle carefully in the morning with a wide-tooth brush and use a leave-in conditioner to ease knots.

What to do with your clip-in extensions overnight

So we’ve established that you shouldn’t sleep in your clip-in extensions overnight, but what should you do with them?

It’s important to store them properly so they last longer and stay in top shape/quality.

Here’s a quick step by step guide on storing your clip-in extensions safely.

Step 1: Remove them carefully
Unclip each weft gently to avoid pulling on your natural hair (don’t rush!). Start from the bottom up to make removal easier and avoid tangles.

Step 2: Brush out tangles
Use a wide-toothed comb or soft-bristle brush to remove any knots from the extensions. Start at the ends of your extensions and slowly work your way up to avoid breakage.

Step 3: Store them properly
There’s a few options when storing your extensions.

  • Use a silk storage bag which protects hair from dust, tangling and dryness.
  • Place them in a storage case or box which keeps the wefts in shape and prevents bending of the clips
  • Use an extension coat hanger to help keep them smooth and ready for their next use.

MHE Tip: Avoid storing your clip-in extensions in plastic bags as this can trap moisture and lead to frizzy hair.

How to keep your clip-in extensions fresh for the next use

To ensure your clip-ins remain soft, smooth and ready to wear, make sure to

  • Keep them clean using only sulfate-free shampoo & wash only when necessary.
  • Use leave-in conditioner sparingly as too much product can cause build up on the extensions.
  • If straightened or curled, allow them to cool before storing away.

Do’s and don’ts of clip-in extension overnight care

Sleeping in clip-in extensions isn’t recommended, so ensuring proper removal, care, and storage will help them last longer and stay in top condition.

Following these simple steps will make sure your MHE extensions remain tangle-free, soft and ready to wear every time.
